3,000 signatures + comments to city council

via

Last night a few people supporting our cause attended the local city-council meeting. Public comment was allowed as the meeting began, so several of us stood to speak (for those who’d like to see what we said, click here and check out Item 3).

There’s not really any way for us to know how our ideas were received since there was no discussion between those speaking and those on city council—we talked, and they listened. But the mayor did tell me prior to the meeting that although I had requested a one-on-one meeting to discuss the issue, she likely would not meet with me because when a city department has a task, she likes to let it “run its course” without getting involved.

Which begs the question, How do we ever talk about these things with city council? I’m curious to see what happens moving forward.

In other news, we surpassed 3,000 signatures last night. That means from Tuesday, July 2 to Tuesday, July 9, more than 3,000 people pledged support to our proposal. Here it is again for those who would like a refresh:

As an alternative to the city’s proposed South Boulevard striping and widening plan, we support the following:

Signage that celebrates South Boulevard’s historic nature

Two wide lanes

25 mph speed limit

No road widening (as proposed for 2021)

I’ll be back with more information soon. Thanks to all of you fighting to preserve the boulevard! We aren’t done yet. And look for an article in this Sunday’s issue of the Post Register. •

  1. Thank you for posting this recording regarding S. Boulevard. I appreciate the efforts to preserve this historic street by opposing any further widening. Lorin Walker

  2. I take when possible this street in the fall because of its beauty. To me this street needs to be preserved as a historical part of our city.
I hope they’ll leave it alone.

  4. Rebecca, I have quite a few signatures that I can add to the total, and working on more. When can I get them to you?

  5. I love South Boulevard and the historic homes. The trees are the beauty. No way should they look at taking away the trees. There’s other streets for cars and bikes to travel. Direct them to those.
