Home again! We feel like we won the lottery. He will convalesce at my parents’ home for the time being. Thanks for all the prayers—we will continue to pray for the Hansens and the families of their sons-in-law to be comforted. ❤️
UPDATE: Thomas is out of surgery, and things look good. Thanks for all your prayers and faith on his behalf! *** Thomas is officially on the road to recovery. Even though there’s some stillness and sunshine along the way, it’s a road full of setbacks and switchbacks, steep climbs and scary drop offs. But even though it’s treacherous, everyone is desperate for their loved ones to have a chance to travel it. We are grateful Thomas has that chance. • This morning Thomas is undergoing a delicate procedure in his brain. If you’ve been praying for him and the others this week, please offer up a special prayer now. • I hung this poster in his room Monday. “Long pride” has been a family mantra for 20 years, but the more important part is the scripture below. We believe in prayer, and we believe the Lord can guide the surgeons’ hands and continue to deliver miracles. Thanks be to Him and thank you for your prayers.
Saturday afternoon a family of 12 boys and men boarded a plane heading home from a South Dakota hunting trip. The plane crashed in a cornfield a mile from the runway. Nine people died. • My brother was on that plane and somehow survived. Today I saw him post-surgery in the Sioux Falls ICU. He suffered a broken jaw, broken hip, broken foot, and bruised organs. We won’t know the emotional impacts until later. • His wife, who is like a sister to me and is seven months pregnant, lost her dad, brother, five-year-old nephew, grandpa, uncle, two cousins, and two cousins-in-law—almost all her special men in a single moment. • “Grateful” doesn’t touch how I feel about my brother still being here. Whatever residual stuff he has to deal with, we will be help him through. He can do this, and we can help. • But it is not lost on us that my sweet sister-in-law’s family is walking through something so dark it can’t be imagined. Women without husbands. Children without dads. Little ones that will never grow up. • The past three days have shown me how good people really are, like the farmers who found the plane in the middle of a blizzard and called for help. Like the young police officer who tied tourniquets that likely saved one survivor’s life. Like the host of people in Idaho Falls who offered their private planes and pilots to fly family members, like me, to a South Dakota hospital so we could celebrate life, both the ones that continue and the beautiful ones lost. • Thank you to these generous friends and strangers, and thank you to those who have reached out. You know, this outpouring of love is a tribute to the Hansens. Good begets good, and they are among the best. The Longs are the lucky ones, and we will be here for the Hansens. We are lucky to have them in our lives.
